About iCAN

iCAN began as a youth-run event aiming to illustrate hope and to inspire community action through the donation of thousands of cans of food.

The iCAN project was created by a group of young leaders from the Wellington region at the 2009 ON THE EDGE Leadership Conference. At the conference, the young leaders were challenged to create an event that would showcase Youth Leadership and make a significant difference in their community. Out of this competition, iCAN was born and with the passion of Wellington’s Secondary School Leaders the wheels were set in motion for the most exciting community service initiative Wellington has ever seen. iCAN was held during NZ Leadership week on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th June 2009.

We decided to break the Guinness World Record for the “largest canned food structure," which was 45,725 cans, held in the USA.

We broke it with 54,527 cans!
