iCAN SAMOA

A group of young Wellingtonians have been asked to support the ongoing development of Samoa post the 2009 Tsunami.
The availability of drinking and usable water continues to be the greatest need for Samoan villages, especially those that have relocated inland following the 2009 Tsunami.
The iCAN crew have agreed to support the development by installing four 3,000 litre water tanks in the Village of Salani, Upolu – one of the many villages in Samoa  for whom water availability is the highest priority.
Establishing secure access to water will enable the village to satisfy basic health and sanitation needs, enable self-sufficiency, and  begin the journey  to recovery. As a reliable source of water, rain collection and storage means the people have enough water not just to survive but also to begin the wellness process and meet basic hygiene standards.

iCAN Samoa will:
-    Improve sanitation, overall health and well being in Salani and nearby villages
-    Focus on a high need situation with a simple and cost effective solution
-    Establish relationships with the local community that can be built on in years to come
-    Document the team’s experiences as a research gathering exercise for possible future projects

“iCAN Samoa is a process to understand how young New Zealand leaders can use their energy and ideas to support their peers in the Pacific in creative and meaningful ways.” - iCAN Team.
